About Trouble

Trouble, the Atlanta rapper born Mariel Semonte Orr, was 23 when he released his first mixtape, 2011’s December 17th. Propelled to street stardom with his breakout hit “Bussin’” and backed by local collective Duct Tape Entertainment, Trouble’s raw, unembellished rhymes were poised to make him his mark on the rich rap legacy of his city. Nearly a decade later, Trouble has experienced the highs and lows of a seasoned career—almost 10 mixtapes and countless notable collaborations, from Young Thug to Fetty Wap to Yo Gotti and more—and is staying grounded and motivated by finding purpose in the tough moments and his rough edges.

Trouble grew up in Atlanta’s Edgewood Ave Projects, a place he holds so dear he named his debut album after it. “I got 41 E [tatted] on me because that was the building where I seen everything at,” he says. Still, Trouble never felt comfortable in the caged environment. “It’s just a whole bunch of nothing for real,” he describes. “A bunch of boxes in one gate… they really keep you in.” Trouble credits his mother and his grandmother for holding down the fort as a child while his father unpredictably came and went throughout his youth. When he was 14, he started rapping and when he was 17, just as he had begun to find his voice as a rapper, he turned to robbing to make ends meet. Both endeavors would steer Trouble down the tumultuous path that’s led him to become the beloved figure he is today.

“Between 2012 and 2015, I was going through so many different street wars and shootouts and shit,” Trouble reflects, touching on the early half of his career—a time riddled with violence, jail time, and suffering. All the while, music was his therapy, but Trouble struggled with the industry demands of building a career. “From going through all that shit and then trying to blend that shit in from the turf to the music shit, it was like an eye opener for me,” he explains. While serving his time his priorities shifted, and when his longtime friend and Atlanta mainstay producer Mike WiLL Made-it implored him to get back into the studio, this time with a renewed seriousness, he obliged. 2018’s Edgewood, produced entirely by Mike Will and featuring Drake, The Weeknd, marked Trouble’s figurative resurrection.

The art of collaboration has always played an important role in Trouble’s career. From contributions to Lupe Fiasco’s Tetsuo & Youth and Rae Sremmurd’s SR3MM, to appearing on tracks with almost every major player in Atlanta rap (Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame, Quavo, and more), Trouble has remained a constant force in the city’s vibrant scene. There may be no rapper more worthy of the label “your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper” than Trouble, who counts Andre 3000 and his personal favorite, Boosie Badazz, as fans. “I just want to inspire,” he says about this new chapter and the path ahead. “I don’t feel like I need to be the biggest, the top, the number one and I don’t got to be the richest,” he adds. “I just feel like its so many motherfuckers who, like me, need somebody who gonna speak for them.”

Def Jam adds a new artist and sound by Blenda. Artist BLENDA, born Blenda Shimba Kabondo was raised in Sweden in a small Stockholm suburb, raised by her two Congolese parents. With her father being guitarist in their local church, BLENDA was early introduced to music and has since then studied jazz and has her roots in traditional gospel. BLENDA decided early in 2018 to take a break from music to go deeper and find her authority as a woman. Her faith in God and her feminist ideals and strong Congolese roots has created a new raw sound. She experiments with synthetic harmonies and melodies from Congo mixed up with a progressive touch of Pop, RnB, and tribe.

In 2019 BLENDA was flown out to New York, being the first time overseas she ended up signing a record deal with legendary record label Star-Trak Entertainment and Def Jam Recordings and which makes her one of the few Swedish artists to sign an American record deal and will mark her new journey on international water.

Our Viewpoint

Soulful singer Sevana debuts her brand new single “Nobody Man”(In.Digg.Nation Collective/Easy Star Records) today (Jul 19). On the bubbly, energetic track, she is changing the narrative by not giving into stereotypes of disrupting relationships. Sevana effortlessly flows between her soaring vocals and bold Jamaican patois, blending traditional R&B/soul that inspires her sound and the Caribbean’s tropical percussive rhythms she was raised on.

Following her 2018 hit “Summer Love,” she passionately delivers yet another powerful statement through her new single “Nobody Man,” produced by JLL.“I wrote ‘Nobody Man’ after a series of unfortunate girlfriends thought I wanted their man, which could never be the case,”  Sevana says firmly. “‘Nobody Man’ challenges the narrative of ‘tek a gyal man,’ which is essentially a braggadocio culture around taking another person’s husband or boyfriend,” the multi-talented singer/songwriter adds.

The video for “Nobody Man,” directed by Wade Rhoden is a vibrant showcase of colorful 90’s inspired style and infectious dance routines. Choreography is a new layer to Sevana’s skill set, yet she commands the camera like a seasoned veteran. “While I’m here I want to use all my gifts to support my purpose, which is to create! I know it’s not typical but I want to use everything I have to support the music I’m doing and the messages I’m trying to communicate,” says Sevana.

SEVANA

As the next big star from the In.Digg.Nation Collective, Sevana is poised to reach great heights with her limitless vocal range, beauty, and soulful depth. Iconic singers like Celine Dion, Beyoncé, and Anita Baker have inspired the Jamaican-born chanteuse, and now Sevana looks to follow in their footsteps. She is the quintessential triple threat talent – singer, actress, and model – making her Jamaica’s “it girl.” Sevana got her musical break In 2008 with the girl group SLR, placing third place on Digicel Rising Stars (Jamaica’s equivalent of American Idol). Then, she was introduced to international audiences through her feature on “Sudden Flight” from Protoje’s 2014 album Ancient Future. She has since released a self-titled solo EP in 2016 and the infectious single “Sometime Love” in 2018. In addition, she played the starring role in the groundbreaking Jamaican web series, Losing Patience. Her photogenic, natural look has made her a favorite of photographers and fashion labels. So far Sevana has earned notoriety by The FADER, Complex, VICE/Noisey, BBC(1Xtra) LargeUp and has graced the cover of RIDDIMMagazine‘s SPRING 2019 issue.
