Billy Porter's Action

“I decided to record ‘For What It’s Worth’ because I wanted to have my art and my music matter, make a difference,” Porter said. “I’ve always been a political person. I come from the generation where the music reflected what was going on in the world, in the day. The song was written and performed sort of during the Civil Rights Era, the Vietnam War, it was protest music and I wanted to have a hand in bringing that back and speaking truth directly to power.”

With the outbreak of the Coronavirus, national attention shifted from the 2020 Election cycle to the worldwide pandemic, but in recent weeks we’ve returned once again to the USA’s most vile, consistent, and persistent plague – racism, the unfair and unequal treatment of POC, police brutality, and the murder of innocent and unarmed black people.

Billy is ANGRY – make no mistake about it – ANGRY, HURT, DISAPPOINTED, TIRED. But he remains steadfast in his belief that we can all come together and make a #ChangeForGood.

“’For What It’s Worth’ is a song about unifying and coming together to make a change,” he said. “I hope people are inspired to not give up, to continue to have hope, and to understand that the only way change comes is for the people to come together and demand it.”
Billy premiered the lyric video for “For What It’s Worth” (created by black, queer visual and performance artist Kameron Neal) during Joe Biden’s S.O.U.L. Saturday.

And he has joined Michelle Obama’s “When We All Vote” initiative as an ambassador. There is still time to register, request absentee ballots, vote in primaries, and VOTE in November.
